Praise for Unspoken: A Story from the Underground Railroad. A New York Times Best Illustrated Book "[D]esigned to present youngsters with a moral choice the author, a former teacher, clearly intended Unspoken to be a challenging book, its somber sepia tone drawings establish a mood of foreboding." -The New York Times Book ReviewCited by: 3.

Unspoken is a wordless picture book about a young Southern farm girl who discovers a runaway slave hiding behind the corn crib in the barn and decides to help him. This is the first time I explore a wordless book with my son, and we were surprised by how much we enjoyed the story told in beautiful illustrations/5.

It seems to me that Unspoken was a book that was trying to break out of the YA mold but ended up following the fold. By far the biggest problem with this novel is Jared Lynburn.

He's your typical brooding, overprotective, woe-is-me, bad boy with anger management issues. I love using the books, The Red Book and Unspoken to teach this skill. Both are beautifully written wordless picture books.

Here are a few activities you can do with either book to help teach the reading strategy of asking and answering questions: Give each student a blank piece of paper with a large T-Chart drawn on it.

Sharing wordless books is a terrific way to build important literacy skills, including listening skills, vocabulary, comprehension and an increased awareness of how stories are structured.

And children love them — they can really pore over the pictures and create their own story in their own words. Wordless books can also be used in ELL classrooms and with struggling readers.

Unspoken: A Story from the Underground Railroad by Henry Cole is a book that has shown up on a few lists from me. I think it is another book that deserves to be read with many different lenses. I love how the students have no words to guide them here but only their careful observations to figure out what actually happens in the story.

Listening is the active process of receiving and responding to spoken (and sometimes unspoken) messages. Before Reading. Children will bring to this book a familiarity with folktales and a love for a well-told story. The Talking Eggs will delight them with its good and evil characters, its strange and magical happenings, and its fresh and natural language.

Tell students that they will be reading a folktale about two sisters—a “good” sister and a “bad” sister. As you read the book, students will naturally be drawn to these particular pages and will begin piecing together the story, asking questions, and building comprehension. Ask readers to look through the illustrations and write down the story in their words.
